I installed straight from the LiveCD (several times) without much trouble (certainly less trouble than I had trying to use my own computer's recovery CD). The only issue was some display problems that would cause portions of windows to display noise. Fortunately minimizing and restoring solved the problem. I don't know about this upgrading business.

I had issues upgrading from 8.10 to 9.04 as well. For some reason, during the 9.04 upgrade it installed lilo and trashed my boot setup. I still haven't been able to figure out why.

Have you tried a dpkg-reconfigure of gdm? That sometimes helps.
