PyCon

So I know Eric is really into Python so I thought I’d post this link to Miro for the PyCon video podcast.

This also a little plug for Miro which is a pretty cool video player/RSS feed subscriber. You can use Miro Guide to find cool content to watch!

Miro has clients for pretty much all platforms(Linux, Windows, OSX).  It’s even in the Ubuntu 9.04 repositories! So “sudo apt-get install miro” everyone!

Ubuntu 8.10 upgrade to 9.04 (Grub and ATI Issues)

Well I took the plunge this weekend and upgraded my ubuntu 8.10 laptop and ubuntu 8.04 desktop to ubuntu 9.04 and I ran into two big problems.  First, my grub menu.lst wasn’t updated correctly and second my ATI video drivers weren’t working after the upgrade.   I’ll paint a little picture of my situation just so that things all make sense.  I’ve did not upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10 on my desktop due to VPN PPTP issues that 8.10 was having and I really needed the VPN capability but that’s all that was stopping me at the time.  I did not need the VPN functionality on my laptop so I went ahead and upgraded that machine.

Jesse James Hollywood comes to trial

Well this isn’t really tech oriented but it was just something that’s currently happening.

Jesse James Hollywood is pretty much indirectly responsible for the death of Nicholas Markowitz in August 2000.  A friend of Jesse James Hollywood owed Jesse some money and was allegedly told that by murdering Nicholas Markowitz(the brother of another guy that owed Jesse Money) that his debt would be forgotten.  Jesse James Hollywood fled the country in 2000 and wasn’t found until 2005.  Most of the individuals involved were around 20 years old.

It’s really sad that people so young made so many bad decisions.  In any case Jesse James Hollywood is having his trial April 27th of this year. I hope that justice is served, however I think we might see an example of the corruption in the court system with this one.  We shall see…

This story is the basis of the movie Alpha Dog that was released in 2006.

How to get a Sansa Clip working with Rhythmbox in Ubuntu

So I got me an 8gb Sansa Clip from Walmart the other day for $50.  Yeah I know pretty decent deal for an 8gb. Anyway I was trying to get it to work with Rhythmbox, and I was having some trouble but then I ran across this post on Ubuntu Forums.

So apparently all you have to do in order to get the player to show up in Rhythmbox is to  add a file called “.is_audio_player” in the root directory of the Sansa MP3 player.

Facebook and MySpace what lies beneath the profile

I think most of us dabble with Myspace.com or Facebook.com to satisfy our social needs of communication.

I watched some presentations on the inner workings of Facebook.com and Myspace.com that are hosted on a cool site called infoq.com.

Netload.in Failure

Hmm, looks like netload.in is down. I haven’t really ever used it but right now it’s giving a 500 error.

–02:21:02–  http://netload.in/
=> `index.html.1′
Resolving netload.in… 85.131.244.110
Connecting to netload.in|85.131.244.110|:80… connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response… 500 Internal Server Error
02:21:02 ERROR 500: Internal Server Error.

Could it have been shut down? Who knows! Data sharing/storing sites come and go faster than celebrities jump in and out of rehab.

Netload.in has an Alexa rank of 526, in comparison rapidshare.com has an alexa rank of 17.

Oh well, we shall see if anything pops up in the news or if the netload.in just had some server issues.

UPDATE:

Netload.in is back up and there wasn’t really any explaination to why the site went down.  I guess it wasn’t the law interveining!

The Big Permissions Scare :O

I gave myself a pretty big scare yesterday. I was happily going along, using my computer like usual when I started to run into some internet problems. “Oh, I haven’t changed my DNS servers today,” I thought — sometimes the DNS doesn’t seem to work quite right here and I have to use OpenDNS if I want to go to any websites. So, since I’m running Ubuntu, I opened up System->Network, clicked on Authorize, and entered my username and password. I waited expectantly for it to authorize me, but it gave me a message that said “Error: could not authenticate,” or something along those lines.
