Multi-Touch Patent

Update: Does anyone know precisely what it is that Apple has patented? The Apple Blog seems to suggest they were granted a sweeping, all-inclusive patent on anything multi-touch, but PC Magazine hints that it was somewhat more specific and has only really protected the pinch-and-zoom feature. Does anyone have a clarification on this?

The Apple Blog has an essay in defense of Apple’s recently approved multi-touch patent. As an inventor it would be nice to have multi-touch available without a license from Apple, but it was hard to argue with this paragraph:

“…[W]hy put in the massive amounts of time, money and effort to truly innovate — and put up with all your competitors mocking and ridiculing it until the product becomes a huge hit — only to watch them change their tune and just start ripping it off? The incentive is that if you take those huge risks (does anyone not appreciate what a risk this was for Apple?) you’ll get rewarded by being afforded some level of protection. That potential reward encourages innovation, it doesn’t kill it. In fact, it’s a major reason for the patent system in the first place.”

So remember, if you’re upset by the multi-touch patent, just go out there and invent something better. Thanks to the patent system, you’ll get your reward (even if you can’t have multi-touch on everything in sight).

OS Critique: Mac

We visited Best Buy last night to check out Macs and netbooks. MacBooks are sleek, though that can be taken multiple ways. For some it means smooth and pretty. For others it means slippery. As more and more people adopt Macs, it makes sense to take a look at the ups and downs of their OS and interface. A lot of people are enamored with the Cupertino Kid, though a friend of mine remarked that a computer whiz he knows has become “measurably dumber” since becoming a Mac user. Let’s take a look at what the virtues and vices of a Mac.

Episode #0

This is the zeroth episode of Pointless Rants (of course it’s zero-indexed, it’s a technology podcast).

In this episode of Pointless Rants we did the following:

I’m Here Because Someone Lacks Discretion

Well, Tom has suckered me into joining the blog. I tried blogging once, but it’s hard to keep the momentum going when you’re posting about offshoot/hybrid philosophy. Fortunately, this time it’s up to Tom to keep the momentum going. I’ll probably be posting about operating systems, Python, and because I first learned to program on a Commodore 64, I’ll probably be looking for old (really old) computers still active in the wild. For instance, I know of at least one water treatment plant that monitors arsenic levels with an Atari.

The biggest problem with tiny netbooks…

The Intro

I have to admit that I have been caught up in the “Netbook Hysteria” that has occurred since the release of the EeePC by ASUS.  I watched the rumors about the EeePC and I even called ASUS, asking to be a beta tester for the little devils.

The first time I actually encountered a netbook was about a month ago in a….you guessed it, corporate giant and consumer goods selling extraordinaire, Best Buy.

And yes, ASUS never called me back about the beta testing. Congratulations, you get a gold star for guessing that.
